About Us

Our Story

Camp Firedragon brings summer magic to Chinese American International School (CAIS) — and everyone’s invited! Whether you’re a CAIS student or just looking for an unforgettable camp, our program mixes school spirit with classic camp fun for an awesome all-kids-welcome experience. Camp Firedragon is an extension of our school’s commitment to joyful learning, rooted in the values of the school and offering high-quality summer experiences to all.

Worlds of Wonder by the Ages

From tiny campers to teens, Camp Firedragon has something for everyone 2.5-15! Our Preschool and Kindergarten groups can dive into English or full Mandarin immersion with playful, age-appropriate adventures all summer long. Rising 1st-2nd graders enjoy a fun blend of creative specialties and classic camp activities. For rising 3rd-8th graders, a wide range of specialty and adventure options keep curiosity burning bright. For rising 8th-10th graders ready to lead, our Counselor-in-Training program builds confidence, leadership, and real-world skills — all while having a blast.

Preschoolers

Through play, little ones can learn about BIG ideas. Preschoolers dive into a world of STEAM-based adventures introducing them to design thinking, robotics, science, engineering, and story telling.

Exploration comes in many forms — from the lines of a play to traversing the landmarks of San Francisco — as Firedragons discover new interests, friendships, and adventures all summer long.

Camps held in English. (1st graders are eligible to join the Kindergarten Mandarin cohort.)

Whether it’s sports skill building, staging a musical, or geocaching and trailblazing, summer offers a world of discovery for 3rd-5th graders at Camp Firedragon.

The Fire Behind Our Fun

Great programs deserve great spaces. Camp Firedragon takes flight at the newly renovated CAIS campus at 3250 19th AVE. Purpose-built spaces — including a theater, gymnasium, performing arts studio, ceramics studio, and three play structures — on this 5.4 acre oasis of urban green space provide the perfect backdrop for creativity, movement, and discovery.

Conveniently located on the 28, 28R, 29, M and K Muni lines, neighboring Stonestown Galleria.

Theater

Our youth-dedicated theater is a vibrant learning space where campers explore every aspect of performance. From acting and directing to set design and stage management, it’s a place to build confidence, creativity, and teamwork—both onstage and behind the scenes.

Gym

Bursting with energy and excitement, our gymnasium invites campers to jump, run, and play together. From team sports to creative games, it’s a space where youth build strength, friendships, and a love for active living.

Soccer Field

From soccer scrimmages to relay races, our outdoor field is where campers run free and play hard! It’s a welcoming space for all field sports, encouraging teamwork, active fun, and a love of outdoor play.

Performing Arts Studio

Filled with rhythm, motion, and creativity, our performing arts studio invites youth to move, play, and express themselves through dance and music. Campers build confidence and connection as they learn, create, and perform.

Ceramics Studio

Our multimedia art and ceramics studios are hands-on creative hubs where youth explore painting, sculpture, and ceramics. With two functioning kilns, campers bring their ideas to life while learning new techniques and discovering the joy of artistic expression.

Camp Leadership

Sophia Rutkin

Director of Summer Programs

A proud San Franciscan, Sophia Rutkin has built her career on serving the youth of this great city. She received a Bachelors of Arts in History at Vassar College, and a Masters in Business Administration at the University of San Francisco. Through her work with Playworks, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, and the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, she has had the opportunity to develop and lead transformative summer and after school programs. Her spare time is now almost entirely dedicated to her young son Jeremiah, and she also loves to read, play sports, and bake.

Agnes Tong

Associate Preschool Director

Agnes Tong has been working in Early Childhood Development for the last 20 years as a teacher and an assistant director. Fluent in Chinese and English she helped develop and implement the updated STEAM-based Preschool immersion summer camp that began in summer 2025.
